Pirelli joins forces with the UN – to improve global road safety

Pirelli has joined the United Nations Road Safety Trust Fund, helping to fund efforts to make improvements to global road safety.

Pirelli’s foremost concern is to increase driving safety through the application of its own innovative technologies – but the iconic Italian rubber specialist has also contributed in excess of £450,000 to help the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal of halving the number of worldwide road accident deaths by 2020.

Executive Vice Chairman and CEO of Pirelli, Marco Tronchetti Provera said: “For Pirelli road safety is fundamental. We have long standing collaborations with FIA ( International Automobile Federation) and other international institutions in support of concrete projects regarding these themes in many countries. We invest significantly in the technological innovation of our products, an example of which are the intelligent tyres we recently presented which allow the monitoring of tyre condition and guarantee optimal performance and safety.”

In fact, Pirelli has just launced two high-technology smart tyres – the Connesso and Cyber Car. But sadly, they’re not for motorcycles (just yet). Essentially, Pirelli is looking to bring tyre monitoring and the accuracy of information to a new, higher level – to ensure optimum tyre performance. Both products are based on tyres with embedded sensors which monitor information, including tyre pressure, temperature and wear in real time. And in the case of Connesso, the information is sent to driver’s smart phone through a dedicated App, while the Cyber Car rubber sends information directly to the cars’ on board electronic systems.
