The Irish rider suffered a highside on the exit from Acqua Minerali after just three laps around the Imola circuit, with the cause of the accident yet unknown. The session was immediately red-flagged.

While the rider was able to exit the track on his own two feet, he was immediately transferred to Imola hospital, where it was confirmed that Laverty had fractured both his left and right wrists.
