Yamaha has just registered designs for an updated YZF-R3, revealing a new look inspired by its R6 Supersport machine.

Earlier this year we brought you a selection of grainy spy shots of the redesigned R3 (or the Asian market equivalent YZF-R25) after it was caught on camera during initial testing in Indonesia. Sadly the snaps were too blurry to show much detail – but a series of designs filed with patent offices in Australia and Turkey offer a much better look at the entry-level A2 licence friendly sportbike.

From a styling perspective, the new R3 seems to share a surprising amount with its R6 big brother. The front end in particular has an undeniably R6-like vibe – albeit with regular-size headlights instead of the small ones found on the R6 and R1. It’s even got an air intake between the headlights, like its larger siblings. The similarities don’t end there though – its side panels also seem to be inspired by the R6, while its fuel tank has been redesigned, with a new shape and larger cut-outs for riders knees.

One big change from the outgoing R3 is the addition of inverted forks – a relatively unseen feature for a machine that sits in the small-displacement segment. Either way, it bodes well for the little R3’s performance. Aside from that, the engine looks pretty similar to that of the outgoing model – and so does the exhaust to be fair. Of course, that doesn’t mean we can’t rule out some internal changes.

Admittedly, the California Air Resources Board has already certified the 2019 YZF-R3, and surprisingly the documents show no changes to the 321cc engine’s emissions. Of course, there’s nothing stopping Yamaha from resubmitting emissions data if there are any changes to the engine – but with the big bike shows at INTERMOT and EICMA just around the corner, we’re hedging our bets on Yamaha leaving it as it is, and finally introducing its updated YZF-R3. Either way, we can’t wait to see one in the flesh.
