BBL Batteries is a leading multi-branch UK-based battery business that focuses on the development, introduction and distribution of new and improved battery technologies to today’s market.

Founded in 1972 and proud to remain one of the few fully independent family enterprises in the aftermarket, BBL Batteries, formally Bristol Batteries, understands that being successful in an ever increasingly competitive market is down to a number of core competences.

These include experience, expertise and unrivalled customer service, as well as the desire to solve problems and advise on solutions that work for their customers.

Battery technology has changed across all the different market places during the last 10 years, none more so than in the Motorcycle sector.

Graham Bultitude, Managing Director of BBL Batteries, said: “BBL Batteries, formally known as Bristol Batteries, was founded in 1972 with the intention of supplying premium quality batteries and associated products across a wide range of sectors. Fifty years later, BBL Batteries is still going from strength to strength which I put down to the fact that we have always stuck to our core principles, premium quality products, superior customer service and providing fantastic value.

“Our experienced team, both at a senior level and across all our branches are true battery experts with many years’ experience and take great pride in working with our customers to solve their ‘power’ issues. BBL is increasingly focused on the development, introduction and distribution of new and improved battery technologies to today’s market, so as a truly independent battery business we can always offer the very best solution to our customers.

“When combined with fifty years’ experience and a keen eye on the future we believe what we offer is truly unique.”

BBL Batteries offers the best advice and has battery experts in all of its five branches, many of whom have vast battery experience having worked for the company for many years.

BBL Batteries is an independent business and their battery experts can advise on the best solution for a customer’s individual requirements. Below is an overview of the different technologies available today.

Motorcycle Battery Technology: The choices

Motorcycle batteries – there’s a wide range to choose from, which technology is best suited to your motorbike?

Conventional

The standard, conventional battery is the industry standard. Built to withstand vibration, protected from corrosion and maintenance free, conventional motorcycles are the most popular technology for most riders.

AGM

You may have heard of AGM Start-Stop car batteries, but did you know you AGM technology is also available in motorcycle batteries? AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) is used in motorcycle batteries to contain the acid and stop it from flowing inside the battery.

AGM batteries have low internal resistance which allows for fast charging and better performance under heavier loads.

Gel

Gel batteries are typically used in highly cyclic applications, and due to their unique technology, they can be mounted in any position. Because the gel material holds the active materials in a semi solid state, gravity isn’t required to ensure these batteries perform.

For motorcycles that have an awkward battery location or require the battery to be at a 45 degree + angle, gel technology is required.

Lithium

Lithium is still a relatively new technology, but it’s extremely popular amongst bikers. Lithium batteries are extremely lightweight, long lasting and have useful features like Bluetooth and built in BMS (Battery Management Systems).
