From the archive: Ten years ago – MSL April 2014

Cast your minds back ten years. David Cameron was Prime Minister, we still had both feet firmly in the European Union, Peter Capaldi had the keys to the Tardis and the April issue of MSL had just hit the shelves of your favourite newsagent (probably now a vape shop).

Here are some highlights from that issue, and a little reminder that you can get access to every issue of MSL going back to 2007 by simply becoming a subscriber.

One to ride: Hawes to Ingleton, North Yorkshire – 16.9 miles on the B6255.

Hawes is a beautiful quaint town, set in the picturesque Yorkshire Dales. Better still, it’s home to a well known biker stop-off; the Penny Garth Cafe. There’s also a petrol station over the road. From here you’ll ride across the rolling B6255, taking in an eclectic mix of flowing bends and stunning scenery. Be careful of the jumps and watch out for the sheep. Ingleton brings you back on to the main A65, which runs from the Dales to the Lake District.

The Great Ride this month was a tour of Ulster. This ride takes in both Northern Ireland and Southern Ireland. Ivan, who made us aware of the route, had the following to say about it:

“Antrim coast road is a fantastic route up the east coast of Northern Ireland, passing by the Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge, Giants Causeway and Bushmills; home of the oldest licensed distillery in the world.

“You’ll carry on to Portrush and ride along the NorthWest 200 racetrack arriving at Portstewart, before going onwards to Joey’s Bar. Londonderry, Donegal and then on to Enniskillen in county Fermanagh (Lake District).

“The Strangford Loch ferry is terrific from Strangford to Portaferry as is the road up to Bangor. Belfast is a great city and has the Titanic museum, which is more than a bit special. Other highlights include Carrickfergus castle and Larne.”
