Kit focus: Icon Patrol 3 Waterproof ‘Urban style’ boots

‘Urban style’ kit as we call it enables you to hop on and off the bike and carry on with your normal routines without having to remove / put on lots of motorcycle gear. Think – urban commuting to work, riding around your town / city running errands or seeing friends, going to the local bike night etc. The ‘urban’ gear allows you to look good off the bike and stay protected on it, whilst reducing the ‘faff’. Naturally, for longer journeys, touring, mile munching etc you’ll probably want to opt for more ‘traditional’ style gear but certainly for smaller journeys ‘urban’ gear is both functional and fashionable.

Icon Patrol 3™ Waterproof Boots from Parts Europe

So, we’re happy to introduce the Icon Patrol 3 Waterproof ‘Urban style’ boots, available through retailers via the distributor Parts Europe. As you can see I’ve wasted no time at all in wearing these fantastic looking boots – and have been doing so for a couple of months now. Not a huge amount of time on the bike in them as yet, thanks to mother nature but that’s definitely going to change as spring approaches.

They’re massively ticking the ‘off-the-bike’ box – super comfortable, stylish, waterproof, breathable – probably the most comfortable motorcycle footwear I’ve worn. I’ve walked MILES in these so far too. And everyone likes them.

What’s the protection like?

The boots are tested & certified according to EN 13634:2017 level 1. The ‘WR’ means they’ve been tested for water resistance and the ‘SRA’ means slip resistance tested on ceramic tile wetted with dilute soap solution (can’t wait to ride on THAT surface!).

The grippy soles are firm and feel substantial although there’s no steel shank in them. You won’t want to be standing on the pegs for hours in them but they’re certainly going to look after the soles of your feet. They’re made from 1000 denier polyester which will offer good abrasion resistance and have reinforced areas for gear changing. The boots are also equipped with a reinforced heel and toe box, which provides added protection to the rider’s feet. Key areas of the boot also have D30 armour sewn into the material. D30 (once seen on Dragon’s Den’) is soft, slim and flexible and used in a lot of motorcycle body armour. You don’t notice it’s there, they’re not bulky!

The Boa lacing system offers a brilliantly easy way to lace up the boot, getting them feeling ‘just right’ and secure on the foot. (See below for how it works, if you’re not familiar with it).

They’re not going to offer you the same protection as full-length motorcycle boots, but matched to a lot of your journeys they’ll do the trick. Once you’ve worn these you’re going to want to reach for them, trust me… my commute to the office is 6 miles, on quiet roads. I can ride to work in these, wear them all day in the office (with my Hood motorcycle jeans) and ride home again. No faff.

Comfortable?

The boots are comfortable to wear, thanks to their cushioned footbed and padded collar. I’ve spent hours in these at a time so far, walked a fair bit in them too and ridden a few times on the bike. Water beads off them and they do have a breathable property which I’ll test more in Summer! They have a removable super-comfy insole, which is excellent but if you want to install your own preferred insoles you can easily do this. That said. I don’t think you’ll want to!

They feel very substantial on, and give you confidence yet are nice and light. They’re true to size too, so order them in the size you normally wear.

Now, let’s tackle the lacing system! If you’ve not heard of Boa, click here and take a look. It’s my first time using it and it makes the boots easy to get on, easy to get off and enables you to get the level of tightness spot on. It feels very robust, too.

The boots open nice and wide, making it very easy to get your feet in.

Once your foot is in, simply press the Boa button and literally dial it for the desired level of tightness. You’ll hear satisfying clicks as it tightens!

To get your feet out, you just pull the button and move the tongue forward. All done in seconds!

Summary

Overall, the Icon Patrol 3 Waterproof ‘Urban style’ motorcycle boots are a great choice for riders looking for a durable, protective and stylish boot. They are well-made, comfortable, and have a good grip, so they can be used in a variety of conditions. The boots are also easy to put on and off and have a great closure system.

But that’s not all! I’ll be using these a lot over the coming months, so expect more feedback, videos and photos. And, standby for more ‘what we wear’ gear talk!
