When is it open? 9am to 5pm Sunday-Tuesday, 9am to 7pm Wednesday to Saturday

What’s the ride there like? Unremarkable, if I’m honest. To reach Fat Boy’s, you ride down one of the two major arterial routes into the City (A12 and A13) or via the old dock roads (A1020).

How is the parking? Ample, unless there is a special event happening in Trinity Buoy Wharf.

Anything special about it? It is a genuine 1940s American roadside diner that made it’s way over here in the late 1980s/early 1990s. It has featured in “Sliding Doors” (the Gwyneth Paltrow film), “Spooks” and a number of music videos.

What food does it sell? As you would expect, the core menu is ‘American diner’: Everything on the menu is home-made. The burgers are perfectly seasoned and cooked well-done (if you want them done differently, just ask) to order.   The owner is constantly developing the menu (he has perfected his own hot-dog recipe and will be looking to add Po-Boys and other items in time).  Breakfast runs from 9am to 11:30, with the main menu kicking in until closing time.

How much does it cost? Prices are about standard for “Posh” burgers: The Bacon & Cheese burger in the photo was £7, chips were an additional £1 and the Oreo milkshake was £4.

How can I pay? Cash or card. If paying by card and you need a receipt, just enter your email address into the card machine and it will be pinged straight to you.

Anything else? Fat Boy’s would be happy to host your club’s meetings. It can seat 25 inside with space on the outside tables for another 10. Just contact owner Tom for more information.

It is just 1.5 miles from the Excel exhibition centre and about the same to the Blackwall Tunnel for the O2. So if visiting a show or exhibition, drop in to Fat Boy’s first and have freshly cooked food in a unique location, served up by a team who will treat you as a customer, not just another number to be processed.
