Sete Gibernau faces two and a half years in jail

The Spanish ex-MotoGP rider and current advisor to Dani Pedrosa is accused of two counts of tax fraud, committed during his final full Championship season in 2006.

Sete Gibernau faces a two-and-a-half year prison sentence following accusations of two counts of tax fraud. According to the EFE agency, the Spanish State Attorney’s Office is accusing Gibernau for allegedly defrauding 774,000 euros in taxes during 2006.

It is suggested that he pretended to reside in Switzerland to evade paying taxes into the Spanish system. The ex-rider has testified today in court in Barcelona, saying that in 2006 he still lived in Switzerland, and did not move to the town of Esplugues de Llobregat in Barcelona with his then wife, Esther Cañadas, until 2007.

According to Spanish newspaper Marca, it was decided to close the case during the investigation phase – however, the Audiencia of Barcelona (the High Court) has decided to reopen the case that has been plaguing Gibernau since 2013.
