We’ve had the first run of Yamaha MotoGP winter tests at the Sepang circuit in Malaysia and, as usual, Valentino Rossi graced the track with his bonce wrapped up in something properly nice.
Specifically, the nine-times world champion headed-out (ha) to test wearing this gorgeous AGV Pista GP R produced especially for the two days of action.
The design is based on Mexican decorated skulls, instead of jewels or beads used to make the pretty, pretty, the helmet gets a series of contrastingly-coloured, hand-painted geometric designs.
The idea for the lid came from Valentino after a recent holiday in Mexico, the Italian legend said: “Huichol art immediately intrigued me, because it uses many of my symbols, like the sun and moon or the turtle.
“We have tried to recreate the effect of the beads that the Mexicans use to bring colour and shape to these objects, but to do so with a Valentino Rossi twist.
“The helmet looks really good, Aldo Drudi did a great job, as did Davide in particular
(Davide Degli Innocenti, graphics and colouring manager at Drudi Performance) – he
created the beads with a brush, one by one.
“We might say that the helmet has become a work of art, something we’ve never seen before.”
Hold your breath for a proddie version of this that we can buy soon people. Finger’s crossed.
