Yamaha joins forces with Gogoro. Investing in battery exchange system for electric scooters.

Yamaha has just partnered up with Gogoro – to further develop its electric scooter technology.

Gorgoro has been producing electric scooters since 2015 – and currently operates a battery replacement system in Taiwan. The charging stations contain charged batteries, which Gogoro riders can exchange on a few simple steps. At the minute, there are around 750 stations – but by 2019 it reckons it’ll have over 1,000. Impressively, since the launch of the system in 2015, Gogoro has recorded around 17 million swaps.

Yamaha is already building the electric scooter E-Vino in Taiwan, which is also being exported to Japan – but it looks like it’s focusing in on Gogoro’s battery replacement system. That’s why it’s joined forces with Gogoro. From what we know, it seems the agreement includes the sale of all-electric scooters developed by Gogoro – and a Yamaha battery replacement system.

In addition, Yamaha want to rebadge and redesign the Gogoro e-scooters under its own brand. That’s not all – the distribution (which is initially limited to Taiwan) will be handled by the Yamaha dealer network. The first Yamaha/Gogoro e-scooters are expected to be launched in the summer of 2019.
