Honda recently unveiled an electric version of its hugely successful CR motocross bike at the Tokyo Motor Show to widespread acclaim – and the bike’s just been caught in action out on track in Japan.

Following the reveal of the new electric CR prototype a few weeks ago – it would seem that the bike’s a lot further on than we first, as it’s just been out on track at the first round of the All Japan Motocross championship. In the hands of ex-HRC rider Kazumasa Masuda Honda’s new electric machine fired off the line – but it took him a little while to get the cornering right. It’s likely that the extra weight of the bike, when compared to the standard CRF250R, took some getting used to.

The photos and video comes courtesy of our pals Young Machine – who’ve also managed to glean a little bit more technical information about the new machine. From what they’ve told us, the power unit has been developed with M-TEC and Mugen – utilising the brands Isle of Man TT-winning electric tech. The frame is essentially the same as the 2018 CRF 250R, with a few tweaks to mount the motor and battery. But at this stage, that’s about as much as we know. There’s been no news on whether we’ll see the bike on racetracks again soon – but looking at how well it goes, it shouldn’t be too far in the future.
