Here’s all the details of the gorgeous Yamaha R6 20th Anniversary bike

There’s been the Suzuki GSX-R1000 in Kevin Schwantz colours and the Yamaha R1 in it’s 20th Anniversary clothes that sold for 40,000 euros which BOTH sold out in 24 hours, so you’ve got to think that there’s a market for a 20th Anniversary Yamaha R6. But this isn’t an official Yamaha. Oh no.

This particular bike was made as a one-off and will be owned by the winner of a lottery of Japanese R6 fans. The lottery is due to be drawn on June 28. The bike will be delivered to the person whose details are drawn and they will then pay £11,308 for the one-off special.

When the first R6 was shown to the public at the end of 1998 it was a landmark model in the development of the track-inspired 600cc class. Whilst the R6’s claimed 108bhp was plenty of poke for the era (and with some claims of 120bhp) it wasn’t – as legend may have it – the first production bike to break the 200bhp a litre mark. That incredible achievement had been smashed some TEN years before when the Suzuki RGV250K (VJ21) appeared, making a claimed 58hp for it’s 249cc motor. A year after its presentation, however, Jörg Teuchert won the Supersport 600 World Championship on the Yamaha – the R6 was established as an icon of the time.

That first bike will always be remembered for its red and white colour scheme, and this special is a tribute to that original machine.

There are no changes from technical point of view. 118.4hp and 61.7Nm of torque from the four-cylinder inline engine and tipping the scales at 190kg.

Whilst it’s not an official Yamaha model (yet) the bike’s design by GK Dynamics (who came up with the original R6’s red and white livery) was unveiled at Sugo to much positivity – so there’s a good chance we could see this motorcycle appear as an ‘official’ model in the near future, based on the public’s response, at least, to the way this thing looks.
