Inside enduro | Last minute comp proves a winner for Broderick

BroderickI had a mate ring me on Saturday night and ask if I fancied a go at an enduro the following day? I figured I would. I’m always keen to get out and ride with new people and take on new tacks. The Shuckburgh event was hosted by Cotswold Enduro and there were over 170 people entered across different classes. The lap was just over four miles and the duration was two hours straight. I got a chance to walk a bit of the circuit and get a feel for the terrain. It was mostly woodland, which isn’t my favourite, but my biggest stumbling block was not having anyone to do my pit stop. My CRF450R’s fuel range is good for just over an hour, so a top up was needed.

I got a great start in the race and worked my way to the front. The clear track helped me to build a buffer and I did my best to get cleanly past the slower riders when it came time to start lapping. The fuel stop was a real disaster. I had petrol everywhere and was half expecting the bike to go up in flames – hands up if you want to help out at my next race? I threw the can down and got back out on track. The pit stop had cost me the lead, but I dug in and eventually got it back. Apart from bouncing off a few trees, the race was pretty straight forward and clean. I took the win with a 2m 36 lead on the guy in second, having lapped up to sixth place. I’m happy with that and hope it will help me ahead of this coming weekend’s race meeting at Ashby Peurorum. It’s the third round of the Lincolnshire Enduro Championship and I’m hoping to take the Expert championship lead, which I’m trailing by two points. Fingers crossed.
