Custom bikes saw an increase of 38.9% whilst naked, supersport and touring bikes all rose more than a quarter compared to July 2019.

Why are motorcycle sales on the rise?

The MCIA also noted that Powered Two Wheelers (PTW) training schools reported “record levels of first-time riders taking their CBT training, a course that gives access to commuter-friendly 125cc petrol or 11Kw electric scooters and motorcycles.”

Typically the training takes one day to complete, and the MCIA acknowledge that “it’s not surprising that registrations of these vehicles have exploded.”

It is believed the growing reluctance to use public transport during the COVID-19 pandemic has encouraged commuters to switch to two-wheels.

The MCIA stated that with new commuter-type two-wheelers, more people are enjoying the eased congestion on the UK’s roads.

“More people are enjoying what our Continental cousins have known for years: PTWs are easy to ride and park, convenient, inexpensive and really good fun,” a MCIA statement reads.

“They cut journey times and for those who choose an electric PTW, are often easy to charge via a domestic three-pin plug, with many featuring a removable battery that can be charged at home or work. Additionally, they provide completely isolated travel.”
