In May 2013 the Dambusters2013 Charity Ride was part of the extensive 70th Anniversary of the famous Dams Raid in 1943, when 617 Squadron RAF breached two of Germany’s ‘Great Dams’. UK bikers rode from RAF Scampton, wartime home of the Dambusters, to the Mohne Dam where they met up with local German bikers for joint ride out around the scenic Mohnesee itself. The Mayor, local dignitaries and German television attended a commemorative wreath laying ceremony at the Dam itself. Just under £14,000 was raised for charity!

Dambusters charity ride 003“The Dambusters Charity Ride is a fantastic way to learn about important historical events that shaped this Country and made it what it is.  I learned so much about the Dambusters raids I was embarrassed! The ride across Germany and the visits to the Lancaster Bombers Crash sites was humbling, and the opportunity to raise money for some great Charities made it all the more worthwhile. Dambusters is a great event so register to ride with Dambusters2014, get on your bike and get stuck in!”                                                                                     Tim Kenney, Dambusters2013 Rider

In 2014 the same organising team are at it again! This year they are riding to Arnhem in September as part of the 70th Anniversary of Operation Market Garden, the airborne attempt to capture the bridges that marked the route into the heart of Germany.

The charity ride will start at RAF Coningsby, home of the Royal Air Force Battle of Britain Memorial Flight who will host a start event on 17th September 2014, and will finish with a ride into the city of Arnhem in time for the commemoration ceremonies at the famous John Frost Bridge on the 19th September 2014.

Dambusters2014 are inviting riders to take part in this historic event. All Dambusters riders get a comprehensive ‘Rider Pack’ with information, ferry discounts and ideas on places to visit en-route.

“The RAFBF is a wonderful charity that supports our Service people and their families, drawing together past and present, officers and airmen. Being a part of this adventure brings in another adventure-loving team – bikers and here’s your chance to mix pleasure, challenge and adventure while helping and supporting a charity that is in the front line of support for your Royal Air Force.   There’s never been a better time to do this – the draws on the Benevolent Fund are greater than ever and you can make a real difference. Good luck to you all”  Gp Capt Ian Gale, MBE, MBA, MA, RAF

Dambusters2014 are asking that riders raise at least £250 for the ride’s two charities to qualify to join. This year’s charities are the RAF Benevolent Fund (www.rafbf.org) and Motorcycle Outreach (www.motorcycleoutreach.org). Moneys raised should be paid safely and securely to the dedicated fundraising site, prior to departure at www.virginmoneygiving.com/team/Dambusters2014 . Email Simon Dufton, the event organiser, at [email protected] for more information and to register to join the ride.
