MotoGP: Jorge Lorenzo: “I will be faster”

Yesterday at Sepang saw five time World Champion Jorge Lorenzo make his return to the track on a MotoGP bike when he stepped out on the Yamaha factory M1 as official test rider.

As the former King bedded into the 2020 motorcycle, his lap times dropped with his best time putting him second fastest after just one day of action since his retirement from racing last year. Indeed, Lorenzo’s quickest lap time was fractionally slower (by the hundredths of a second) than his best time set in the Sepang race last year on the factory Honda.

Talking after the track sessions, Lorenzo said: “I finished the day in the saddle and it was very good.

“I was attentive to the characteristics of the bike and how it has changed over the years, but it is a very similar bike to the one I left when I last rode for Yamaha in 2016.

“This M1 made me feel at ease immediately, even though the concern for the injuries I have suffered slowed me a little and meant that I wasn’t as fast as I could be.

“I think I need a small period of adaptation to be at the top and look for the limit but I will be faster. The test day was really exciting for me.”
