In 2023, both Harley-Davidson and Indian motorcycle maker Hero MotoCorp had a significant year. The X440’s launch in India was a groundbreaking moment for both companies. It marked the MotoCorp’s entrance into the small-displacement bike market in India, making it the lone single-cylinder offering in their existing range. Similarly, this was Hero MotoCorp’s first foray into the high-end segment, targeting the emerging passionate ridership in India.

As usual, when two companies collaborate to launch a new model, each brand develops its own version of the machine. This was evident in the case of KTM and CFMoto, with the latter introducing the 800NK, a bike built on technical foundations similar to KTM’s bike. It seems history may repeat itself as Harley and Hero are reportedly working together, and Hero MotoCorp is expected to unveil their own rendition of the retro-inspired 440cc roadster at the upcoming Hero World event on January 22, 2024. Various Indian motoring publications have reported on this rumour, but Hero MotoCorp has yet to provide specific details about their version of the motorcycle.

Despite being developed and manufactured by Hero, the upcoming Hero-branded machine will likely have similar foundations as the X440. It is expected to have a vintage aesthetic, following in the footsteps of popular bikes such as the Honda CB350 H’Ness and Royal Enfield Classic 350 in India. However, don’t let its attractive appearance deceive you; the X440 is a reliable and versatile option for everyday use and longer journeys outside of the city.

The X440’s engine, created by Hero, is a powerful and efficient 440cc machine. It boasts air and oil cooling, fuel injection, and a single cylinder that produces an impressive 27 horsepower and 38 Nm (28 pound-feet) of torque. To control this power, the X440 is equipped with a six-speed manual gearbox. Its foundation includes top-of-the-line KYB inverted forks and twin gas-charged rear shocks. Braking on the X440 is controlled by dual-channel ABS, utilizing a single 320 mm disc in the front and a 240 mm disc in the back.

Following the debut of the Hero-badged Harley X440, Hero MotoCorp will have another premium model in addition to the recently launched Karizma XMR. The Karizma XMR boasts a powerful 210cc engine and contemporary design and technology, catering to sporty commuters. The upcoming launch of a vintage-styled roadster with a slightly larger engine is sure to draw the attention of retro fans seeking a reliable bike for everyday transportation and weekend trips. Will we see these in the UK? Quite possibly as Hero have eyes on the UK market in 2024. Keep watching!
