Tested! AGV K6 full face motorcycle helmet

The K6 features a carbon/aramid/fibreglass shell, making it extremely light (1220g in the smallest of four shell sizes) and tough, with a six-point venting system, Pinlock-ready, front-locking visor system and double-D ring fastening. How light? The K6 weighs less than my open-face!

To keep the weight down there is no integral sun visor, balanced by the quick-release system being the easiest to operate on any helmet I’ve worked on (I fit all the Pinlocks in our household). Open the visor fully, pull down the levers on the side and off it pops. Refitting is just as simple; for sunny days swapping your clear visor for a tinted one is easy. The shape is low but wide, with the ‘collarbone-safe’ profile adding to the aerodynamics and protecting in an impact.

It is snug; I suggest trying as the chin guard sits very close to the face. Once on, it’s very comfortable. AGV employs three technical fabrics (including shalimar and ritmo) in the lining, with waterproof outer and breathable inner layers. A very welcome feature (see the red tabs) is the quick-release check pads, allowing emergency services to remove with greatly reduced risk. It’s a great-looking helmet with striking graphics – anything improving visibility has to be appreciated – and I’ve had numerous compliments on the look.

Vision is outstanding. With a 190-degree horizontal and 85-degree vertical field of vision you never get the edges of the aperture interfering with your view. The venting is effective, with a flow of cool air running through the helmet. Without the chin curtain it is a little noisy, but curtain fitted it is quiet up to motorway speeds.

The vents are low-profile, so do take a bit of finding initially. On a longer trip I had earphones in; there was ample room to take the helmet on and off without tugging on them. One gripe is the K6’s party trick. It’s a nice idea: the visor has four open positions, the bottom setting locking in place, with one further lock position holding it open just a crack. In theory it is useful as it allows airflow at stop, but the tab to operate the release is central and requires pressing and lifting – not easy on the move, especially in thicker gloves. But it is a very stable visor; even without the lock it always felt it would remain down.

This is a top-end helmet. AGV puts a lot of thought and effort into making this helmet, and it shows. But do try for size.
