In some gutting news for the UK bike scene, CCM Motorcycles has gone into administration, ending over 50 years of truly unique British motorcycle production.
Founded in 1971 by Alan Clews, the Bolton-based brand carved out a proper cult following with its hand-built, lightweight machines and unmistakable design language. From motocross to the modern Spitfire range, CCM always did things a bit differently – and that’s exactly why riders loved them.

In recent years, things looked promising. Investment in 2021 hinted at a bold expansion plan, with CCM aiming for new markets across Europe and the US. There was even talk of an all-new adventure bike, dubbed Project X. But behind the scenes, the numbers weren’t stacking up.
Production slowed, staff numbers were cut, and despite the passion of the people behind it, the business has now formally entered administration, with six associated companies affected, including Clews & Sons and CCM Motorcycles (UK) Ltd.

It’s a massive shame. These bikes weren’t churned out in big factories or mass-produced for the high street – they were crafted with soul. From their signature exposed frames to their booming single-cylinder engines, CCMs had character in spades.
While this may be the end of the road for now, we’ll be keeping an eye on what happens next. Whether someone steps in to revive the brand or not, there’s no doubt that CCM leaves behind a legacy worth celebrating.
