RIDE Cymru Knievels: Raising money and breaking records

Thirteen years ago, the ‘RIDE Cymru’ event was conceived – a charity 1,000-mile ride around the scenic roads of Wales. In its third year, the event mutated to have all riders dressed as Evel Knievel in honour of the 40th anniversary of the stunt legend’s famous Wembley Stadium jump over thirteen buses. The Cymru Knievel theme has remained and, in later years, the Knievel convoy has left Wales on UK challenges in aid of many charities.

Whilst displaying a fun front, the event is very strict on discipline amongst its entrants in promoting its chosen charity, its unique growing history, and representing the image of the original motorcycle daredevil – indeed, the RIDE Knievels is the only UK motorcycle event endorsed by the Knievel family of Butte, Montana. Since 2012, over £220,000 has been raised for charity by its riders individually sourcing sponsorship as a condition of entry.

Whilst a minimum 1,000-mile route of motorcycling is to be expected, the event also includes many interesting stops at its arranged ‘Evel Locations’.. These vary from laps at motor racing circuits on their motorcycles, trips down a coal mine, football penalty shootouts and even a rugby kick challenge at Cardiff Arms Park. All suited and booted in the process. There have also been stops to meet motorcycle legends, TV personalities & famous rock musicians…

The current world record holders for the largest number of ‘People dressed as Evel Knievel’ will set off in May this year on a back road route from John O’Groats to Lands End, including stops and challenges en route. The 2024 run will be in aid of children’s charity NSPCC. The riders will be keeping MoreBikes updated on their progress and supplying photos on the way.
